Cheslin Kolbe is coming home. The DHL Stormers have confirmed that the double Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok wing will rejoin the Cape Town franchise where his professional career began, signing a two-year deal that runs from July 1 and takes effect for the 2026/27 season.
It is a homecoming nine years in the making. Kolbe earned 49 caps for the Stormers before leaving to forge a glittering career abroad, winning silverware with Toulouse and Toulon in France and then starring for Suntory Sungoliath in Japan — a journey that turned him into one of the most decorated players in the sport across both the 15-a-side and sevens codes.
Director of rugby John Dobson framed the signing as far more than a marquee recruitment. "Cheslin is a son of this community and has remained a staunch DHL Stormers fan his whole life," Dobson said. "He gives such hope and inspiration to our fans, so to have him back in our club colours is huge. As a player, he can do things on the field that nobody else can. Beyond that, his attitude and work ethic are second to none, and his presence in the squad is sure to lift everyone around him."
The move forms part of the franchise's long-term blueprint, badged Project 2029, and Dobson made clear Kolbe is being recruited as a cornerstone of the culture rather than a short-term marketing coup. "He will play an invaluable role for us both on and off the field as we continue to develop our squad," he said. "He'll be 35 in 2029, and beyond the obvious strike power he will offer, he also provides the ideal example for the young talent coming through in terms of his discipline, conditioning, versatility and work rate."
For Kolbe, the decision was rooted in identity. "Cape Town and this team have played such a big role in my life and career," he said. "When I left, it was always with the hope that one day I would come back home and represent this team again. To have that opportunity now means a huge amount to my family and I."
The 32-year-old also bought into the project he is joining. "The Stormers are a big part of who I am, and I'm grateful to be coming back at such an exciting time for the club," Kolbe said. "Project 2029 is a big vision and something I really believe in. There is a lot of talent here, a strong culture and a clear plan for what this team can become."
He arrives into a backline already stocked with international firepower, and as the latest in a run of Springbok signings: captain Siya Kolisi is returning from the Sharks and tighthead prop Wilco Louw from the Bulls, both part of the same Project 2029 push. The deal itself was a complex one to land, reportedly involving Kolbe's representatives at Roc Nation Sports, a third-party commercial backer and SA Rugby's funding structure for players of national interest.
For a club chasing a first major trophy in the United Rugby Championship and a deeper run in the Champions Cup, the message is unambiguous: the Stormers are building, and they have just added a player capable of deciding the biggest matches with a single step.
