Rassie Erasmus has used the Argentina Test as a rehabilitation exercise, naming a 26-man Springbok squad for next Saturday's Rugby Championship fixture in Buenos Aires built around five players returning from injury.
Captain Siya Kolisi heads the group. He is joined by locks Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager, playmaker Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and scrumhalf Morne van den Berg, all of whom have recovered sufficiently to travel to South America. The squad departed in two groups on Saturday ahead of the one-off Test at Estadio Jose Amalfitani, which kicks off at 21:00 local time.
Just as telling is who has been left behind. Cheslin Kolbe, Damian Willemse, Jesse Kriel and Ruan Nortje — all of whom featured prominently across South Africa's opening four Tests of the season — have been rested. They regrouped in Johannesburg on Sunday to begin preparation for the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry tour against New Zealand, which brings Tests at Ellis Park on 22 August and DHL Stadium on 29 August.
Erasmus was open about the trade-off. "We wanted to strike the right balance," he told OFM Sport. "Some of the players returning from injury haven't had much rugby in recent weeks, so this is a great opportunity for them to get quality Test minutes under their belts before we face New Zealand."
"The players coming back have worked extremely hard during their rehabilitation and have trained well this week," he added. "At the same time, it's important to manage the workload of those who have played consistently throughout the season."
Prop Ox Nche and utility forward Franco Mostert remain sidelined. Both will continue rehabilitation and use next week's training camp to build fitness while the squad is in Argentina.
Erasmus was careful not to frame the trip as a development exercise. Argentina have run South Africa close repeatedly in recent seasons, and beat the All Blacks at home for the first time in 2025.
"Argentina are a quality side, and we know exactly how tough this challenge will be," he said. "They are a well-coached team that have pushed us hard over the last few seasons and have been very competitive in the Rugby Championship. We expect a physical battle in Buenos Aires."
Felipe Contepomi has named 10 uncapped players in his own squad for the fixture, making it a genuine test of both squads' second and third tiers rather than a full-strength collision.
The depth Erasmus has accumulated is exactly what his opposite number on the upcoming tour has been talking about. All Blacks coach Dave Rennie, speaking at a welcome event at DHL Stadium after landing in Cape Town on Friday, singled it out unprompted.
"We're well aware of how tough this challenge is: double world champions, Rassie's used a hell of a lot of players, 46 players maybe, and you wouldn't know," Rennie said. "The team they put out against Scotland, there was a lot of changes, and Scotland are an excellent side, but they won convincingly in the end. So we're well aware of the task in front. He's done a phenomenal job here, Rassie."
Rennie was equally clear that his own side is a work in progress. "We're building. We're a new side, we've got a lot of new staff, we've got quite a lot of new young players, so we're learning a lot," he said, after a 40-21 win over Ireland at Eden Park made it three from three under his charge.
