Biography
A combative loose forward in the classic South African mould, Ettienne Oosthuizen brings defensive grit and constant breakdown pressure to the Lions' pack. Born on 22 December 1992, he has become a key component of the side's loose trio, where his primary brief is to slow opposition ball and force turnovers at the contact area. Oosthuizen has delivered consistent performances in the United Rugby Championship, and his form has been recognised with a call-up to a Springbok training squad. His value lies in the unglamorous work: chopping down ball-carriers, contesting rucks and lending a dominant physical edge in both tight and open play. Equally comfortable doing the hard yards close to the ruck or covering ground in defence, he reads the game well enough to position himself where the contest for possession is fiercest. For the Lions he is a reliable enforcer, the sort of player who sets a defensive tone and gives those around him licence to play. His durability and appetite for the dirty work make him an important figure in the engine room as the club competes across the demanding URC season.
