Biography

A hooker born on 3 April 2000, Ewan Ashman has established himself among Scotland's front-row options after a rapid rise through the professional ranks. Born in Canada and raised in Scotland, he qualified through family ties and made an immediate impression at Test level, scoring a try on his Scotland debut against Australia in November 2021. Ashman fits the modern template for the position. He is mobile enough to operate as an extra loose forward around the fringes, quick to the breakdown, and a willing carrier who looks to get over the gainline rather than simply set the ball. His try-scoring record owes much to close-range maul work, an area where his timing and strength at the back of a drive have made him a consistent threat. The core duties are handled with similar care. His lineout throwing has been a focus of his development, and his scrummaging has strengthened as he has added the bulk required at international level. Competition for the Scotland number two jersey has been fierce throughout his career, but Ashman's blend of set-piece work and open-field energy has kept him firmly in the national selection picture across recent Six Nations and autumn campaigns.
