Biography
The Gloucester academy has built a reputation for producing home-grown forwards, and George Knowles is one of the latest to emerge from that pathway. Born on 17 July 2006, the flanker is among the more youthful members of the senior set-up, with a game built on the qualities academies prize in a modern back-rower: a high work rate, a willingness to compete at the breakdown and a developing physical edge on both sides of the ball. Even at this early stage, Knowles has shown the energy and appetite for the contact area that tend to mark out a forward worth tracking. The seasons ahead will be about building consistency, sharpening his game management and adding the power required to hold up week to week in the Gallagher Premiership, the natural learning curve for any young loose forward stepping into senior rugby. For now he gives Gloucester useful depth and a glimpse of what is coming through, embodying the hard-working ethos demanded of those on the club's pathway. His task is a familiar one for academy graduates: to convert that early promise into established senior credentials over a sustained run of rugby. If he manages it, Knowles has the foundations to develop into a reliable presence in the Gloucester back row, and his progress will be one to follow.
