Biography
Henco van Wyk is a South African midfielder representing the Lions in the United Rugby Championship. Born in May 2001, he came through the Johannesburg-based franchise's development structures before establishing himself as a senior squad option. Operating principally in the outside-centre channel, Van Wyk combines a robust defensive frame with directness in attack — a profile well-suited to the gain-line-focused South African approach to midfield play. He earned recognition with a South Africa 'A' call-up in 2022, an indication of his standing within the country's deep midfield depth chart in the years following the Springboks' back-to-back World Cup successes. For the Lions, he provides a physical presence in the centres and forms part of the squad's effort to remain competitive in a URC that has seen the South African sides settle into the competition. As one of the franchise's products to have broken into the senior side, Van Wyk represents the Lions' ongoing investment in their academy and pathway system.
