Biography
An industrious flanker cut from the classic openside mould, James Mullan has steadily carved out a role in the Blues' back row. Born on 20 November 2002, he is known above all for his appetite for work at the breakdown, where his timing and low body position help his side contest possession and slow opposition ball. Mullan's game is built on volume tackling and a strong defensive presence, the kind of unglamorous graft that underpins a well-organised forward pack. As a contesting seven, his primary task is to make the ground around the ruck uncomfortable for opponents while offering quick support to his own ball-carriers in attack. Selections for the Blues in Super Rugby Pacific have given him valuable exposure at the top level of the southern hemisphere game, and his tackling and turnover threat are assets his coaches lean on in tight contests. Still early in his professional journey, Mullan brings the energy and tenacity that mark out the breakdown specialists, and continued development of his ball-carrying and link play will only add to a back-row profile already built on honest, repeatable effort.
