Biography

One of the most recognisable backs of his generation, James O'Connor has enjoyed a long and well-travelled career since first emerging as a teenage prodigy in Australian rugby. Born on 5 July 1990, the Wallaby is a genuine utility back, equally at home at fly-half, centre or fullback, and prized for his elusive running and sharp attacking instincts. O'Connor has won more than 60 Test caps for Australia and featured at the 2011 Rugby World Cup, while at club level he was part of the Leicester Tigers side that won the English Premiership in 2022. His career has spanned Australia, Europe and beyond, and that breadth of experience now informs his role at Leicester as a senior playmaker and on-field tactician. Comfortable orchestrating an attack or stepping in to finish a move himself, O'Connor reads defences quickly and has the footwork and handling to exploit the narrowest of gaps. Just as importantly, he offers leadership and composure in the pressure moments that decide knockout rugby, guiding those around him and managing the game with a veteran's understanding. For the Tigers he provides versatility, game intelligence and a deep knowledge of how to control the key passages of a contest.
