Biography

A Bulls academy product born on 6 May 2004, JF van Heerden is an openside-style flanker making his way through the Pretoria franchise's development system. Still in the early years of his senior career, he is among the loose-forward prospects being integrated from the Bulls' pathway programmes into the wider professional setup. Van Heerden's game is built on the fundamentals traditionally demanded of a South African flanker: a strong tackling presence, commitment to the contact area, and a willingness to chase lost causes across the park. He competes for turnover ball at the breakdown and contributes in the carry when given the opportunity, traits that have seen him progress through Bulls age-grade and academy structures. Now part of a union that competes on multiple fronts each season — the United Rugby Championship, European competitions, and the domestic Currie Cup — Van Heerden is positioned to add senior experience as he pushes for regular selection. With the Bulls placing long-standing emphasis on producing hard-nosed back-row forwards, his progression reflects the franchise's continued investment in developing homegrown loose-forward talent. The focus for the young flanker is on building consistency and accumulating top-level minutes as he looks to establish himself at senior level.
