Biography

South African lock Ruan Nortje has developed into one of the most recognisable engine-room forwards in the United Rugby Championship. Born on 25 July 1998, he rose through the Bulls' system and established himself as a first-choice second-rower during the Pretoria franchise's transition into URC competition. Nortje's game combines a commanding aerial presence at lineout time with a strong work rate in the tight exchanges, attributes that have made him a natural leader within the Bulls pack. He was named club captain in 2022, an appointment that reflected both his on-field profile and the respect he commands within the squad, and has since led the Bulls to URC finals appearances against Europe's leading sides. International honours followed in 2023 when he earned his first Springbok cap, adding a Test dimension to a CV built on consistent provincial performance. Within the Bulls setup his influence extends beyond match-day output, with coaches leaning on him for lineout calling and defensive organisation. With South Africa's second-row stocks historically deep, continued Test selection remains competitive, but his provincial form keeps him firmly in the national conversation.
