Biography
One of the most prolific back-row try-scorers of his generation, Sam Simmonds has long combined the pace of a back with the physicality of a forward. Born on 10 November 1994, the England international and British & Irish Lion made his name at Exeter Chiefs, where he was central to the club's Premiership and European Champions Cup successes and was named European Player of the Year in 2020. After a spell with Montpellier, he joined Lyon ahead of the 2025-26 season, bringing big-game experience to the French side's loose-forward stocks. Equally at home at No.8 or flanker, Simmonds is renowned for his intelligent support lines, dynamic ball-carrying and a knack for finishing from close range and in the wider channels. His work rate in defence and around the breakdown complements an attacking game that has consistently produced tries at the highest level. For all the silverware he has won, it is his ability to turn half-chances into points that has defined his career and made him a coveted signing in the Top 14.
