Biography

Stephan Lewies is a South African lock whose move to Harlequins in 2019 added a vocal set-piece leader to the London club's second row. Born on 27 January 1992, he arrived in the Premiership with a strong grounding in South African rugby and quickly established himself as one of the more authoritative engine-room forwards in the English club game. Lewies built his early career with the Sharks in Super Rugby, where he developed into a recognised lineout caller and scrummaging lock before moving to Europe. That background gave him the technical grounding to take on lineout responsibility at Harlequins, and his organisation of the set piece has become a defining feature of his time at the Stoop. As captain, he has helped drive the club through demanding seasons in the Premiership and in Europe. His leadership was central to the squad that lifted the 2020–21 Premiership title, a landmark moment that underlined the culture and forward identity Harlequins had built around him. On the field he is a physical tight-five forward, a reliable scrummager and a consistent presence at lineout time in both attack and defence. Lewies continues to lead from the front for Harlequins, combining set-piece craft with the kind of senior voice coaching staff lean on through the grind of a long Premiership and European campaign.
