Biography

Stephen Varney has been a fixture of Italy's engine room since announcing himself as a teenager. Born on 16 May 2001, the scrum-half made his international debut at just 19 and quickly grew into a regular starter for the Azzurri. Varney is known for crisp passing and incisive runs from the base of the ruck, providing the tempo and tactical direction that a developing Italian side has come to rely upon. As the primary link between forwards and backs, he sets the pace of Italy's attack and takes on much of the responsibility for game management at half-back. His blend of quick distribution and a willingness to take on the line makes him a dual threat, capable of releasing his runners or sparking attacks himself. Having gained experience across the international calendar from a young age, Varney has matured into one of the cornerstones of Italy's backline, trusted to direct play in the demanding environment of the Six Nations. As he enters his prime years, he remains central to Italy's ambitions, combining the composure of an established test nine with the energy that first marked him out as a prospect.
