Biography

Veveni Lasaqa is a loose forward who broke into the Highlanders squad during the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season, bringing a hard-edged defensive presence to the Dunedin-based franchise. Born on 4 June 2002, the flanker has made an early impression with his work over the ball at the breakdown, where he competes aggressively for turnovers and slows opposition ball with relentless effort. His tackle technique is rooted in low body height and quick recovery, allowing him to chain successive hits in the same defensive set. With ball in hand, Lasaqa is a willing carrier who looks to get behind the gain line rather than seek out space, complementing the Highlanders' direct forward game. Still finding his feet at the senior professional level, he is one of several young loose forwards the franchise has invested in as it rebuilds its pack identity. The combination of breakdown competitiveness, defensive intensity, and a strong physical frame marks him as a player with room to grow inside one of New Zealand's longest-standing Super Rugby clubs.
