Biography
A combative front-row forward, Willem van den Hever has worked his way into the Cell C Sharks set-up in Durban, one of South African rugby's most demanding production lines. The hooker arrived at the United Rugby Championship and EPCR Challenge Cup club after building a reputation for abrasive, physical forward play in the South African provincial game.
Hooker is among the most technically exacting roles in the modern game, blending the set-piece responsibilities of lineout throwing and scrummaging with the workload of a loose forward around the field. At a province as deep in forward talent as the Sharks, senior selection is fiercely contested, and front-rowers are judged on the accuracy of their throwing, their impact at the breakdown and their physical presence in both attack and defence.
Van den Hever fits the archetype of the South African forward who relies on aggression, work rate and set-piece reliability rather than flashier attributes. As he continues to push for consistent senior involvement at the Sharks, his progress will hinge on nailing down the lineout and scrum detail that earns front-row forwards the trust of their coaches in a squad stocked with internationals and emerging Springbok contenders.
