Gregor Townsend has torn up his Scotland side for Saturday's Nations Championship finale against Fiji at Murrayfield, making 14 changes from the team beaten by South Africa and handing the captaincy to centre Stafford McDowall. Number eight Gregor Brown is the only survivor from the Loftus defeat.
The reshuffle blends fresh faces with returning firepower. Hooker Gregor Hiddleston and openside flanker Freddy Douglas are handed their first international starts, while wingers Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe, Scotland's two leading try-scorers with 38 and 35 tries respectively, come back into the side after sitting out earlier rounds.
Townsend framed the wholesale changes as an investment rather than a gamble. "We've got to have an eye on the future, so the depth that we've created and are still creating, that only comes if you give people opportunities," he said. "We're excited to see this team play. A lot of them have been training throughout against the teams that have played against Argentina and South Africa."
The coach singled out his debutants for the breakdown battle he expects against the Pacific islanders. "The breakdown is going to be a crucial area. Fiji love to jackal; we now have one of the best jackals in the world on our team," Townsend said of Douglas. Of Hiddleston, he added: "He has shown over the last two weeks that he is not only ready for a Test match but he actually plays better or thrives even more playing Test rugby."
Scotland arrive with a curious tag hanging over them. After South Africa withstood a Scotland fightback to win at Loftus, Springboks boss Rassie Erasmus called Scotland "the third-best side in international rugby," a label Fiji have seized on. "That's a great compliment for Scotland. They played the number one team in the world last week, and we always want to test ourselves against the best because it helps us measure our performance," said Fiji head coach Senirusi Seruvakula.
Seruvakula was unmoved by Scotland's sweeping rotation. "Yes, they've made 14 changes. I believe some of those were due to injuries, but for us, the focus remains on ourselves. It doesn't matter what changes Scotland makes," he said. Kick-off at Murrayfield is at 14:10 on Saturday, with Scotland, one win and one loss from their opening two games, chasing a strong finish and Fiji eager to prove their credentials against a side ranked among the world's best.
